We here at MSF.com are proud to announce that we have officially sanctioned May 16th, as Clean Up Your Computer Day! What is Clean Up Your Computer Day you ask yourself? Simply put, it’s a day that puts you back in control of your computer by cleaning, organizing, and backing up everything on your PC or laptop. This article will be a play-by-play of what I do when my computer starts getting out of hand and will hopefully help make your computing experience a lot more enjoyable. You’re likely to notice that I reference a few of the programs I wrote about in my MSF’s List of 10 Essential Windows Programs post-this is because those particular programs are still awesome. There is a new category here at MSF, “Geek Stuff.” In honor of this new category, I want to speak on the game that I have been waiting years for…Final Fantasy 13. I was first introduced to this amazing RPG series years and years ago when I played Final Fantasy 3, which to this day is one of the best RPG’s of all time. Since then I have been a Final Fantasy nerd who anticipates each installment like it is a personal present from Square.
For those of you who are not familiar with this truly amazing game, let me explain why Final Fantasy 13 is so important. (more…)

Like most nerds in my high school, I was always trying to figure out ways to get the best performance out of my PC. At that time, I didn’t have a lot of funds available to upgrade the hardware in my system, so imagine my excitement when I learned that there were more streamlined operating systems that demanded far less of my system resources than the current version of Windows (’98 I think).
I took my first trek into the world of Linux back in 2000 with a distro called Mandrake. I had such a hard time (more…)

We here at MSF don’t normally do tutorials, but due to my recent excursion into the awesome world of Ubuntu, one of the most popular flavors of Linux, and my love for Windows games, I wanted to share some of the knowledge I have gained in trying to get both Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 to live in complete harmony on two different hard drives inside my computer.
This article is aimed at people who already have Ubuntu installed and want to run a stand alone version of Windows 7, or any version of Windows for that matter, to (more…)

YouTube is an excellent website, it really is.
Yesterday I got to sit down and watch a live press conference held by Google, on YouTube which is why I mentioned it, to announce the release of their new social networking tool aptly named Buzz. It should, however, come as no shock that the new Buzz isn’t really anything new at all, but an almost carbon copy of Facebook and to a lesser extent, Twitter.
The way Google explains it, Buzz will allow Gmail users (more…)

What I meant to say was “10 Windows Programs That Are Free”. This here’s a list of 10 programs that find or will find their way onto every new Windows install I do (I usually reformat my hard drive about every 6 months). Hopefully this list will showcase some programs that are not likely to be on your computer, but probably should be because they are so bad ass and free. Keep in mind as you check this list that all the programs listed here are ones that I use myself and that there may and probably are better programs out there suited to do the specific job you are looking to do. As I stated in my American Comics vs Manga post, I’ve been getting back into reading comics. I have gotten literally several thousand digitally archived comic books in various formats with various file names denoting each book. Personally, I like all the files of a certain type to be named uniformly and since many different people make scans of comic books, there are tons of different possible ways the books get named. Renaming several thousand files can get very time consuming, leaving little time/want to actually read them. In the course of my mass renamings, I’ve found two small programs that (more…)

Yes! I have been saying this for years and they are finally going to do it. Google is coming out with it’s own operating system. It’s my understanding that visually it will look like Chrome, Google’s bad ass, light-weight web browser, and is going to be based on the Linux kernal. I love Chrome and I’m a fan of Linux, so guess what my computer will be running sometime next year? Google Chrome OS. Oh yes.
I’m not going to sit here and write a full blown post about it, because I’m not so good with the technical aspects of it (more…)

Check this out. A buddy of mine that me and Steve went to school with, though Steve wouldn’t know him due to the fact that he was a strings geek like me, has authored a truly amazing plugin for Firefox called ArchiveFacebook. Stemming from the question “What happens when Facebook is gone”, Carl Northern, now a software developer, has made it possible to archive your Facebook account to your hard drive, thus ensuring that if your data comes up missing, not only does Facebook suck for it, but it’ll be your fault as well for not backing it up. We’re talking photos, messages, status updates, (more…)
